After all, many cultural heritage institutions have objects that were archived so long ago that the “neutral” descriptors that accompany them are at best outdated and at worst harmful. Many librarians and archivists know such problems exist within their collections but addressing them is a massive undertaking.
I am an online LIS student at the University of Iowa and for my practicum I spearheaded a reparative description project at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO (where I reside). I reviewed potentially problematic metadata thousands of digitized objects, flagged items for revision/follow-up, created a reading list for Digital and Archives Services staff, and wrote a summative report of my project. This session will discuss my processes and findings.
